My researches on dry acne

As I told you in my previous post, I found out that I have dry acne. Since I have never heard of this term, I went on google and made all sorts of research on this problem.
Here is what I found out about this type of acne.

What is dry acne?

Dry acne occurs when your skin is dry, but you still break out.
This type of acne is really common, especially for adulthood acne.
It's a really difficult type of acne to get rid of.

What are the causes of dry skin?

  • Your oily acne-prone skin can change to dry acne-prone skin by using too many medicated anti-acne products. Most of the anti-acne products are really skin-drying and by overusing these products your skin type can change, without even noticing it.
  • It can be caused by over-cleansing your skin.
  • Winter and low humidity can cause dry skin.
  • Long hot showers
  • chemicals included skin care products

How can dry skin cause acne?

If your skin is dry it means that important mineral oils are missing and at this point your skin is weak.
Weakened skin is more prone to acne. Bacterias and chemicals can penetrate deeper into your skin.
Your skin is more vulnerable to infections caused by acne and chemicals included products can cause inflammation to the skin.

How to get rid of dry acne?

As mentioned above it's really difficult to get rid of these acne type. . The best way to get rid of these problems is by not using anti-acne product, but only concentrate in treatening your skin. First of all, your skin needs moisture.

Here are some tips on how to improve your skin:

  • Try to avoid plain soap, it removes your natural oils from your skin, which can lead to acne.
  • Drink a lot of water. At least 8 glasses per day. Water will keep your skin hydrated and reduces acne.
  • Change your cleanser to a cleanser that was specially developped for dry skin. It could be that your dry skin was caused by using the wrong cleanser.
  • Use a moisturizer. It will hydrate and provides a protecting layer against dirt and toxins. Go for a gel moisturizer and make sure that it doesn't clog your pores.
  • Avoid chemicals!! Many anti-acne products contain many harsh chemicals. Try to not use them.
  • Avoid product with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or alcohol
  • Wash your face only twice a day.
  • Use cold water or luke warm water instead of hot water. Hot water dries out your skin too.
  • Use a humidifier. If you want to go for a cheap way, keep water near your heater.

I've been writing a lot about moisturizer in this post. So how to find the right moisturizer?!?

First of all, a moisturizer is a mixture of water and fats. They contain substances to attract moisture. They seal the moisture inside your skin by creating a layer of fat above your skin.

You can find moisturizer in different types:
  • Cream: contains more fats than water.
  • Lotion: contains more water than fats.
Lotion type

Choose an oil-free moisturizer. They mostly contain silicones and glycerin. Oil-based moisturizer contain mineral oil, petrolatum or shea butter which are most likely to cause acne.

The best time to moisturize your skin, is right after showering. While showering water penetrates into your skin. To keep that water inside your body, apply a moisturizer to lock it in.

Don't exaggerate in moisturizing your skin. Of course your skin needs moisture, but applying a moisturizer 5 times a day won't make your skin look better. On the opposite side, over-treatening your skin could make it break out more. To be save moisturize your skin not more than 3 times a day. Make it morning, evening and after showering.
